Eh, it kind of works, but it's more fun in person because you lose a lot of the atmosphere if you're on Skype, and it's hard to get a word in edge-wise if you're the ONLY one on Skype. They do have some paid programs you can get now, like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, which allow you to create and play tabletop RPGs online with friends.
Seriously, though, D&D is my favorite pastime. I am currently playing in...7 different games in 3 different rulesets. Of course, some of the games are once a month, some are once a week, some are once in a blue moon, etc. I think my current favorite character is the Elven Magus I just made in the Pathfinder game my buddy just started. His name is Arradon, and at level 3, he will get a class feature which turns his weapon into an intelligent weapon at the cost of some of his abilities long-term. I've decided that the weapon is one which has been passed down through his family for generations (Elven generations, too, so a fuckin long time), from an ancient emperor who created the blade. After his death, it went silent and refused to unsheath or awaken for anyone but, "The last son of Gurgaranor". Well, surprise surprise, a few thousand years later here comes my character who was given the blade for safe-keeping while his father went off to a war he never returned from. Since then, Arradon has been on a 60-year bender across the world, the pub crawl to end all pub crawls, and when he hits level 3 he will be the most disappointing sight for Gurgaranor's blade to lay its "eyes" on.
"You? Really? No, there must be some mistake. I am the Blade of the Emperor, not some drunken layabout!" It's gonna be hilarious.

might be fun to see if we could eventually get a ninja skype game going though. someone else would need to have the reference materials though. i gave all my old books away and don't remember shit!
