Surinder Singh route into the UK - Ben and I are basically married, but getting a residence visa in the UK is, like, basically impossible. (Not exaggerating, it really is).

BUT if he exercises his EU treaty rights in germany (or any other EEA country), I can come, live there under his treaty rights, become a resident THERE as his spouse, then move into the UK as a german resident with treaty rights. It's a work around, but it's 100% legal, and it's pretty much the only way to move back to Ben's home country.

And Germany is great! <3

You might want to hurry up with that, if we leave the EU that might not be possible

I was actually worried about that. Is that an actual possibility?

I'd move to Canada, possibly. But it's not perfect up there either, and I unfortunately am not an old enough British citizen to get grandfathered in to Canadian citizenship.

My only problem with moving to Germany is that right now I'm floating my way through a job based on the fact that I've got a smooth voice and can talk to people on the phones. If I can't speak German fluently, I can't do call center work there. Though to be fair, that'd be a good reason to get out of this rut and back in to tech support like I should be.

The whole Brexit thing will definitely complicate things for you if this is still your plan. Britain is moving ahead with a full exit of the EU and that means no more free movement of EU citizens. You'll know this already but in order to get UK citizenship and a passport you need to resident in the country for something like 5 years so that makes things difficult. You can be a resident in Germany but you have to be there for 8 years in order to get citizenship. Residency doesn't grant you any right to stay in another country. You can't be a resident in France, for example, but have your US passport and use your French residency to move to the UK. In order to get permanent residence (not citizenship) in Germany, you need to be living there for 5 years without interruption, have a good job, health insurance, a pension and pass an integration course which tests you on German language, culture and history.

So really, it's worth exploring other options. Brexit will take a couple of years to be fully complete but it will still be less time than you need to gain proper residence/citizenship in another EU country. If you're not married then you can still get a visa to stay in the UK for six-months at a time, provided Ben has full citizenship, you have somewhere to stay and you can prove that you will not be a burden on the welfare system. Ben needs to be earning at least £18,600 per year if it's just the two of you and £22,400 if you have a child. That figure goes up for each child you plan on bringing. It also costs around $1000 to even apply so make sure you meet all the requirements first!

It's a real pain in the arse, sorry!
