My latest project BB-8 Build

Postby Nicktr1 » Mon Oct 10, 2016 2:12 am

Hi all thought I would share my latest Star Wars Build with you. It's a full scale BB-8 from the force awakens.I had the pleasure of displaying my droid with fellow builders at Star Wars Celebration Europe this year.

I do not have the talent to do something like this. I hope to see more of your work :)

Thanks Skywalker :) Before starting I had no experience in building to this scale before so joined the BB-8 builders club and went from there. Was definitely a great learning experience for me. I'm currently working on a Kylo Ren mannequin display, will post updates as I go.

Thanks only took these few pictures of the process.
The body was made from a 50cm dia outdoor solar globe that I primed painted and attached vinyl body decals.
The Dome (head) was 3D printed which was the attached together > glued > filled and sanded > primed > paint & final wetsand.
The whole droid then was weathered and sealed with a clear coat.
Lighting is a 9volt lighting LED kit built from scratch.
Sounds are streamed over bluetooth from my device to a speaker in the dome.
Base is a Gym Ball Stand that i modified with foam and decals.

It was at first as I was rushing a bit lol. Once I started to take my time It got easier, then using a hairdryer after applying removed any remaining wrinkles.

The whole thing is amazing, and that top section is just beautiful. Huge admiration here.

How do you plan on making it roll if I may ask?

It will be a new build with an aluminum frame for the body with 3D printed panels. I will be building an axle drive system similar to the 'red carpet' version that Lucasfilm uses for their events. If you go to the 37:35 mark on this video It gives a good idea on how this is achieved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzzWmTIVv3c

Very cool. I love seeing 3d printed stuff, especially Star Wars related (huge fan XD). Always inspires me to try and make a Boba Fett costume.

I've never done anything with 3d printing...is it expensive?

Thanks, 3D printing can be quite reasonable but it really needs to be done with a decent machine, a lot of people start with a cheap printer and end up with a lot of failed/poor prints making costs higher. I don't have a printer myself yet, a friend printed my parts for me at cost.
