Pablo Neruda appreciation thread

Postby cerrodepedro » Wed Sep 21, 2016 7:02 am

Our Queen likes Neruda. And I like to shamelessly please her. The following poem is public domain (even the Universidad de Chile makes it available on their site) but can also be found in Canto General. I used a spreadsheet to put a couple of tab characters between the original and the English translation line by line and used the fixed width BBCode tag to make sure it formatted pretty so that you could kind of get a sense of the rhythm.

Commentary encouraged.

Pablo Neruda wrote:

Our father was elastic and blue.             Elástico y azul fue nuestro padre.

RIGHT? I really wanna research the backstory on these particular poems of his because everything points to him having at least a somewhat sensitive and appreciative look at indigenous cultures, which is an achievement given how segregated people will describe the situation in the Andes and Río de la Plata regions, and South and Central America in general. I also like to imagine Pablo himself speaking in mostly Chilean slang.
